“He is rich so he must be a good businessman.” This was a common refrain among Donald Trump supporters in 2016. While we agree that Donald Trump is rich we thought an examination of the methods he used to get rich (borrow money from his father) and stay rich were worth some examination. This research led us to a news story explaining how Trump took over a publicly funded golf course and claimed its success as his own.
Public money began turning a Bronx landfill into a public golf course in the 1990’s. By 2006 the project had been bogged down with government mismanagement and as the project wound down, the city looked for a management company to take over the course once completed. Enter Donald Trump, who was the recipient of the brand new golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus and paid for with public funds. Donald Trump got a sweet deal from the city to manage the course, and kudos to him for securing such a deal. He reported $8 million in collection after just one year of running the course. But it wasn’t enough for Trump to get a lopsidedly good deal for himself at the expense of taxpayers. He and his minions also had to misrepresent the part Trump played in the “success” of the golf course.
From the Washington Post article:
Ivanka Trump wrote in a blog post last year that her father whipped workers into shape by saying, “You guys have made a lot of money pushing sand around for the last 20 years, but that stops with me.” City officials, however, say Trump was merely a “concessionaire” let in after the bulk of the city’s design and heavy construction work was finished.
So what are we to take away from this? Did Donald Trump do a good job of “whipping workers into shape” to complete the project? Mmm… unlikely, but in any case, how much could that be worth? He did swoop in and let his money make him more money at the expense of the taxpayers of New York. A lot of wealth comes from the already-wealthy finding opportunities that are only available to the wealthy, and this case follows that pattern. While that may be a kind of success, Trump continues to falsely represent himself as participating in the actual building of the Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point in the Bronx. SAD.
