About the Documentation: The structure of Color U.S. Trumped is uniform throughout. For each page of the story of Donald Trump’s rise to the presidency, there is a corresponding page for coloring which visually matches the text. Our story about Donald Trump is satirical but it is entirely based on fact which we spent considerable time to document and footnote. Some details about Donald Trump’s rise are merely interesting while others are utterly disturbing. We wanted readers to have access to this database of online news articles in order to further their interest in any of the specific topics covered in Color U.S. Trumped.
This was a basic Politico fact-check article. We wanted to get to the bottom of Donald Trump’s on-the-record statement that his father had given him a “small loan” to get started with his casino business. There is documentation that Trump’s father loaned him $14 million dollars in the 1980’s. While there is nothing inherently wrong with borrowing money to start a business, Donald Trump is not a self-made man. Nepotism played a strong role in Trump’s financial success.

This Washington Post article covers Donald Trump’s family history and early years in New York. By all accounts, Trump was raised in a world of substantial wealth. He was raised in a mansion with a private chef for the family and other luxuries of the era – color television, home intercom system, etc. There are several detailed accounts of Donald’s poor behavior as a young man which culminated in his father sending him off to a military school to learn some “discipline.” This is just basic background stuff that we used to document that Trump was wealthy and antagonistic in his youth.
“I’m a Christian, a conservative and a Republican, in that order”
— Mike Pence, 2016 GOP Convention
We thought it appropriate that Mike Pence introduce the Color U.S. Trumped story since he is going to be carrying a lot of water for the Trump Administration. Mike Pence’s career in Indiana politics has been marked by time working on “religious freedom” legislation. His actions are understandable when you consider this excerpt from Time Magazine: “Pence… called being gay a choice and said keeping gays from marrying was not discrimination, but an enforcement of ‘God’s idea.'”
The Problem: Pence’s blatant bigotry is a real problem for people who have and will suffer as he makes and shapes policy. He is unapologetic about the fact that he would like to take away the civil rights of a large subset of Americans.
His record on immigration, education, the environment, trade, guns, and personal ethics aren’t much better so our depiction of Pence with the halo could not be more ironic.
